There she is, at the end.
She gave me the warmth of a friend.
But it is getting colder.
If the flame could only start.
If the life could only spark.
Then maybe it will not smolder.
And as you swear
that you will remain there,
I feel so much distance.
Your promise, you may keep.
Clutch me as I fall asleep.
No matter how tight, I fall out of existence.

As I’m going down,
I open my hand.
My palm hits the ledge.
I climb up and start to stand.
I watched a fountain of faces.
They flood downwards. Here, of all places.
But then I saw her soul, so pink and pure.
I reached in and I pulled her.

Her body fell on top of me.
She pointed and said, “that’s where you will be.”
There was a light. I took her hand.
“What else do you know about this land?”
She began to giggle as she said,
“long story short, it’s the land of the dead.
I’m not surprised you are so lucky
to just realize you had reached purgatory.”
I asked her, “So to come here, you must’ve to die?”
After her nod, I asked, “you came for me, but why?”
She sang, “Only the purest souls know of this breach.
It comes to those who have the will to reach.”

I said, “Before I go, there is something I need to do.
If I go back, what will become of you?”
“I go back with the other beings
and become a life that has fulfilled its meaning.”
As she said those words, I shook my head.
I would live again if I leave her for dead.
Or…

With all of my strength,
I threw her out of sight.
She tumbled upwards
to be swallowed up by the light.
I turned to the water,
Each drop is another soul.
I will be their watcher.
I have now accepted the role.

She had given me life.
I only wish to do the same.
If she comes again,
she will have a different name.
Such a childish innocence in her
does not deserve this burden.
I take her spot as the souls’ keeper
so she lives on as a person.
While you may consider me as
the afterlife’s overseer
but keep in mind that
without the cloak, I’m still the reaper.

There she is, at her end.
Here she comes, I may see her again.
Her freezing touch becomes warm with my long-awaited love.
I decide that her soul belongs to the heavens above.
May her halo come quick,
so she may become and angel and all.
May her wings come fast,
so she does not have to fall.
Honestly, I want someone to tell me how this looks to them. I'm not sure if it was obvious that my ideas changed. I first wanted the main character to fall from a river of lost souls to a purgatory to find out how to live again. Then I wanted the girl to be a gate keeper who notices his soul is especially pure. Then I wanted the girl to have a chance at being human instead of stuck being a gate keeper for the dead for eternity. I was listening to Vocaliod's "Story of Evil" when I was inspired, particularly by Rin and Len.
